What is silymarin?

Silymarin isn't a single substance. It is the name given to a naturally occurring group of flavonolignans found within Milk Thistle seed, including compounds such as silybin, isosilybin, silychristin and silydianin. Our Milk Thistle is not an isolated silymarin product. It contains the whole seed, so its naturally occurring silymarin remains alongside the seed's other plant compounds.

Is your Milk Thistle an extract?

No. Forest Milk Thistle is made from whole Milk Thistle seed. We do not use a concentrated Milk Thistle extract or isolated silymarin. The seed is simply prepared, finely milled and encapsulated.

Why use whole Milk Thistle instead of an extract?

They're two very different products. A standardised extract is manufactured to concentrate particular constituents such as silymarin. A whole-seed product retains the broader natural composition of the seed. Our philosophy has always been to use whole foods wherever possible rather than stripping plants down to individual compounds.

Can I open the capsules?

Yes. The capsules simply contain finely milled Milk Thistle seed, so they can be opened and added to food if preferred. Milk Thistle naturally has a slightly earthy and bitter flavour.

Is Milk Thistle the same as silymarin?

Not quite.
Milk Thistle is the plant.
Silymarin describes a particular group of naturally occurring compounds found within its seeds.
An isolated or standardised silymarin supplement is therefore different from eating the whole Milk Thistle seed.
Forest Milk Thistle provides the whole seed rather than an isolated silymarin extract.

When should I take Milk Thistle?

Milk Thistle can be taken at any time of day. For simplicity, we recommend taking your four capsules with a meal and making it part of your normal daily routine. You can also split the serve between two meals if preferred.
